FIRST Group of Companies roadmap for Building Leadership Capacity with a Coach Approach. The organization has covered significant ground in a short time frame! Below are the highlights for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.
May – RFP’s – Began researching organizational leadership & coaching programs and requested proposals from 6 consultants.
Sept – Consultants – Brought forward proposal from consultants Sue Bock and Julie Butcher for development of organizational Leadership Philosophy, 360’s & executive coaching for Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and Leadership Development Plans (LDP’s).
Oct – Commitment – Committed to consultant work and internally developed a full plan including coaching training to foster leadership with a coach approach.
Nov – Project foundation work – Gather data, summarize, draft vision and create a compelling business case for developing leadership and coaching competencies for the leadership team.
Jan – 360’s – Senior Leadership Team (SLT) 360 assessment process.
Feb – SLT Leadership Summit – Review of team 360 results, introduction to Legacy Leadership Model, and review of draft Leadership Philosophy and brainstorming on ‘how’ to foster this kind of leadership within organization (strategies and objectives).
March – SLT 360 debrief – Senior Leadership Team individual 360 assessment debrief with external executive coaches with a goal to identify their strengths and growth opportunities; and the development of their personal Leadership Development Plan (LDP’s).
March – Executive Coaching – Each member of the senior team received 4 months of individual executive coaching by an experienced certified executive coach (approx 8 hours).
March – SLT Leadership Development Plans – With support of executive coaches, SLT to develop their LDP and share with CEO.
March – SLT Plan – SLT met to develop Leadership & Coaching program objectives, strategies and metrics.
April – SLT 2 Day Coaching Training – Senior team to participated in two day Expedition Coaching Training program with Shana Ring to foster coaching skills (questioning and listening) and foster the coach approach to leadership.
April – Coaching Practice – SLT to begin coaching their reports.
April – OLT Coaching Training – Operational Leadership Team (OLT) intro to organizational leadership philosophy and participate in 2 day training for Expedition Coaching. This provided foundational knowledge of organizational leadership philosophy and of ‘why’ we want to foster the coach approach; including more questions and listening.
April – Certification – Certification for program leads on Expedition Coaching Model.
May – Coaching Practice – Start of bi-weekly coaching training for coaches.
May – Coaching Tips – Start of weekly coaching tips for coaches.
June – OLT Leadership Training – Operational Leadership Team participated in a one day session with an introduction to Legacy Leadership Model and 360 process.
July – Coaching Training – 2 day Expedition coaching training for supervisors and specialists.
July – OLT 360’s – 360 assessments done for each of the Operational Leaders to identify their strengths and growth opportunities to be used as a foundation for their Leadership Development Plans (LDP’s).
August – OLT Leadership Development Plans – Operational leaders to develop their own LDP’s with the support of their manager on SLT.
August – OLT Coaching Practice – Operational leaders to begin routine coaching with their direct reports.
August – Action Team – An Action Team of SLT and OLT were brought together to strategize about how to operationalize the learning and build leadership capacity for all.
September – Action Team TOR – The action team developed a terms of reference and strategies for employee growth and engagement in terms of leadership development and with a ‘coach approach’.
November – Project Charter Review – SAG, SLT role clarification.
November – Coaching Practice – Coaching pairing practice with Audits for Vancouver Island Coaches.
November – Action Team Collaboration – Action Team online collaboration tool BASE Camp introduced.
December – All Employee Coaching Training – All employee (140 employees) participated in 3 hour introduction to coaching (Expedition Coaching Model). 13 sessions in total.
January – Coaching Practice – Monthly coaching practice remote branches (phone).
February – LDP Review & Update – SLT and OLT to refine Leadership Development Plans on simplified template.
February – Performance Plans – Leadership competencies and Leadership Development Plans introduced into 2013 performance plans and processes.
February – Vision & Values Review – SLT brainstorming on getting clear on our organizational purpose, vision, values.
April – Coaching Staff training – 1 day expedition coaching training – volunteer.
May-June – Our Why – All employees, Managers & Board Review of Organizational Purpose ‘Why’ we exist, and define ‘Purpose’ statement through input and electronic voting process.
July – 360 Assessments – New managers
August – Monthly Leadership Team meetings – Began monthly leadership team meetings to talk and practice Leadership & Coaching
September – Value Statement Contest – All employees, winner Selected October.
September – Survey of Coaching & Leadership effectiveness – All employees
November / December – All Employees Coaching & Leadership training – 140 employees, 9 sessions. Coaching training part 2 as it applies to GUIDE model and member/clients, as well as introduction to Leadership philosophy of being VIP leaders.
January – Integration of VIP Leadership Philosophy into all employee performance plans – all employees.
January – Personal Leadership Effectiveness Series – Offered to all staff to participate volunteer 2014.
2014 will be an exiting year as we integrate VIP leadership in to all employee performance plans, renew leadership development plans, and integrate leadership and coaching objectives into all leadership performance plans.
